Rita asked: How do I remove glue from wallpaper border? I put a border up that doesn’t require any paste or glue on a bedroom wall. There were many Buzz Lightyear stickers in the packet also. They have all come off very easily. The border wasn’t sticking at the bottom, so I added glue to the bottom. Now the portion that was glued isn’t coming off, and I can’t get the shiny glue off. I don’t know what kind of glue I used. It was probably Elmer’s.
Elmer’s Glue is water soluble, so removing it from walls just requires a bit of patience and a few simple ingredients. Here’s what you need to do.
You Will Need:
- Hot water
- Washcloth
- Bowl or bucket
- Cloth scrubbing sponge
Steps to Remove the Glue:
- Fill a bowl or bucket with hot water.
- Soak the washcloth in hot water. Immediately wring it out and place it over the glue.
- Hold the washcloth against the glue and allow the heat to work.
- After a few moments, before the cloth cools off, remove it and immediately begin wiping the glue away from the wall with the scouring pad.
- Repeat as needed. Replace cooling water with hot water and rinse the scrubbing pad as needed.
Additional Tips and Advice
- If the walls are unfinished or unpainted, applying water (the wet washcloth) will probably damage them. If this is the case, use an iron to apply heat to the wall through a dry towel, then pick the softened glue away with a blunt-tipped object such as a spoon or butter knife.
- When all else fails, use sandpaper to remove the glue. Add ready-to-use plaster (available at hardware or building supply stores) to restore the wall surface, then repaint.
