Marianne said, “How do you clean a satin hanger?”
Satin hangers are made to hold the most delicate clothing, so keeping them clean is important to be sure you don’t accidentally transfer the dirt to your clothes. There are several methods you can choose from to clean your hanger. Pick the one that most meets your needs.
The Washing Method
This method can work well, but the downside to this method is that you have to air dry the hanger because satin should never be dried with heat as it can shrink, and air drying the hanger can take a long time due to the foam filling. If you need the hanger cleaned and ready to use quickly, choose one of the other methods.
You Will Need:
- A sink or bucket
- Soap
- Water
- A cloth
- A gentle detergent
Steps to Clean the Hanger:
- Clean out a sink or bucket with soapy water. Be sure to wipe off all of the walls or surfaces of the sink/bucket.
- Fill the sink or bucket with enough water to cover the hanger.
- Add a gentle detergent, such as Woolite.
- Swish your hand in the water to mix in the detergent.
- Put the hanger in the water and move it around for a few minutes to get the water flowing around and through the material.
- Remove the hanger from the soapy water and rinse it thoroughly.
- Hang the hanger up to dry. Do not hang it in the closet as there is not sufficient air flow in there. Instead, hang it somewhere open, such as on a shower rod. This is the most important step as it will take the foam inside the hanger a long time to dry, possibly even days. You can speed the process by pointing a fan at the hanger; just be sure that the wind is not so strong that it can blow the hanger off (and onto the ground where it may get dirty again).
The Dry Clean Method
Taking the hanger to a dry cleaners is always a good idea, unless you’re pressed for time. Another way to get the hanger dry cleaned is to use a home dry cleaning kit instead.
You Will Need:
- A dry clean kit
- Ribbon
- Tape
- A dryer
Steps to Clean the Hanger:
- Get a home dry cleaning kit in the laundry aisle of your supermarket.
- Follow the instructions on the label of your selected product.
- If your product wants you to spray the satin with a solvent and put it in the dryer, get a ribbon or string and fold it in half. Hang the satin hanger on the fold of the ribbon, and tape the ribbon ends on the outside of the door. This will allow you to put the hanger in the dryer without having it bounce around and possibly get damaged.
The Baking Soda Method
You Will Need:
- A bag
- Baking soda
- A vacuum
Steps to Clean the Hanger:
- Put the hanger in a bag.
- Sprinkle about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the bag.
- Close the bag and shake it to thoroughly coat the hanger with the powder.
- Let the hanger sit in the bag for an hour. The powder will absorb any dirt or oils on the hanger, as well as deodorize it.
- Remove the hanger from the bag and brush off the baking soda.
- A vacuum hose can be used to remove any excess powder if needed. Hold the hose a few inches away from the hanger to ensure that any dirt on the hose does not get onto the hanger accidentally and also to prevent any loose parts on the hanger from coming apart.
Additional Tips:
- The hanger can be hung outside in the sun to speed drying times or as another method of cleaning and deodorizing it (sunlight is a natural cleaner), but don’t leave it out for too long or it may lighten the dye on the satin. This can also help to brighten white satin.
- Wet satin should not be dried in the dryer as it can shrink. Using a dry cleaning kit is the only exception because it uses dry cleaning fluid, not water.
