Lorraine asked: How do I remove floor wax off of a glass door? I have tried stripper, but it seems as if it has dissolved in the glass. I wipe and when it dries the white spots are back. Help me please!
Floor wax makes for beautiful floors but annoying spots and smudges on glass doors that are nearby. To remove this wax, it requires a cleaner that can cut through the wax so it can be wiped away. Here are some methods that have that ability.
Dish Detergent Method
You Will Need:
- Dish detergent
- Rubbing alcohol
- Newspaper
- Hot water
- Sponge or soft cloths
- Bucket
- Rubber gloves
Steps to Remove the Wax:
- Start by mixing hot water with dish detergent in a bucket. The hotter the water, the more effective it will be. If the hot water is bothersome to your hands, try wearing rubber gloves for protection.
- Dip a clean soft cloth or sponge into the sudsy water and begin to wipe away the waxy area. The heat from the water along with the cleaning power of the detergent will help to cut through the wax and remove it from the surface.
- Repeat this application until the wax is removed.
- Rinse with clean water and a clean cloth or sponge.
- Dry the area with a soft towel.
- To ensure there is no wax on the surface, crumple up some newspaper and moisten it with rubbing alcohol.
- Rub this over the area to remove any wax residue that may still be present.
- Rinse again with clean water and a clean cloth or just allow the rubbing alcohol to evaporate.
Ammonia Method
You Will Need:
- Ammonia
- Spray bottle
- Soft cloths or paper towels
Steps to Remove the Wax:
- Ammonia is a common glass cleaner that also has the strength to cut through the wax for removal.
- Pour some ammonia into a spray bottle. Water can be added to dilute it slightly, or it can be used full strength.
- Spray the waxy area with the ammonia and allow it to set for a minute.
- Wipe away with a clean soft cloth or paper towels. Some prefer to clean windows with crumpled newspaper to prevent streaking.
- Use repeated applications until the wax is removed.
Additional Tips and Ideas
- These methods can also be combined by adding a few drops of ammonia to the sudsy water. Ensure that the detergent does not contain bleach as mixing bleach and ammonia will create toxic fumes.
